A Natural Harmony: Using Feng Shui
Principles in the Garden
Speaker: Elaine Anderson
This talk will introduce the concepts of Feng Shui, ancient Chinese principles
of harmony and chi. Elaine will discuss how Feng Shui principles of placement
and design can be used in gardens to invite repose or excitement and restore
harmony and balance.

Chrysanthemums: What's New, What's
Hot, What's hardy in our area
Speaker: Dr. Peter Ascher, U of MN
Pete Ascher, one of the club's favorite speakers, returns to talk about hardy
chrysanthemums, and how to successfully grow and overwinter them. Pete was
involved with U of M's chrysanthemum breeding program and will bring samples of
hardy mums. Following his talk will be his plant sale of unusual sun and shade
plants.

Melanie, an RFGC member, will show us how to make trellises and topiary and
other things which can be used in our gardens. Melanie and her husband use
materials from their gardens and property for their trellises.

About our Speakers (2001)
Diana Alfuth
(February 5: Entry Gardens and Welcoming Guests to your garden and April 2, :
Raised beds: Best uses and how to build)
Diana is currently UW-Extension Horticulture Educator for St. Croix, Pierce and
Polk counties. Part of her job entails training Master Gardeners, and also
involves working with commercial growers and farmers. Prior to her current
position, Diana taught Landscape Design at the University of MN and has a
landscape design business.
Elaine Anderson
(June 4,- A Natural Harmony: Using Feng Shui Principles in the Garden)
Elaine has a BS in Nursing, is an RN, and is founder of Red Tortoise Inc., a
Feng Shui consultation service. She is a graduate of the two year Associate
Program with Carol Hyder, author of Wind and Water: Your Personal Feng Shui
Journey, and is a founding member of the Feng Shui Institute of MN.

(September 10: Chrysanthemums: What's new, what's hot, what's hardy in our area)
One of the garden club's most popular speakers, Pete was involved in U of M's
chrysanthemum breeding programs. Pete taught U of MN graduate horticulture
students for many years and is extremely knowledgeable in many horticulture
areas and can explain concepts in layman's terms. He also has a great sense of
humor and is fun to listen to.
Melanie Elling
(December 3: Making things from your garden for your garden)
Melanie has been a member of RFGC for several years and enjoys gardening and
making things from her garden (you may also have purchased some of her many
plants she brings to the plant sale!). She harvests saplings and twigs from her
property for her trellises. Melanie is also a Master Gardener.
Terry Ferriss,
PhD.
(October 1: Tried and True Perennials)
Terry teaches the perennials class at UW- RF and was our October 2000 speaker on
perennials for different sites and situations. She has been a regular and
popular speaker for the garden club. She also arranged the pruning workshop we
sponsored last spring and had her students prune Heritage Park as part of their
hands-on learning experience. She was named Teacher of the Year a couple of
years ago at UW-RF.
Soni Forsman
(May 7: Home Water Gardens)
Owner of Water Lilies by Forsman, Soni has been in the aquatic business for
almost 12 years. She is knowledgeable about in-ground as well as container water
gardens. She has written for the MN Horticulturist Magazine (now called Northern
Gardener) and is also a water garden consultant. She is a popular speaker at
garden clubs and horticulture events.
Dean Hanson
(March 5: Enjoying Wisconsin butterflies)
Dean's interest and love of butterflies and their disappearing habitats led him
to make this labor of love - a movie about the many butterflies native to our
area. He has shown this movie to many garden clubs in the Twin Cities as well as
to Master Gardeners in Wisconsin. Dean has a deep interest in native prairie
plants and created a sand prairie on his property.
Debbie Lonnee
(November 5: New and Unusual Hardy Perennials)
Debbie has a BS in horticulture from the University of MN. For the past 8 years
she has worked for Bailey's Nursery, one of the country's largest wholesale
suppliers of plants as the Production Coordinator for bedding plants and
perennials. She is an avid gardener with an especially keen interest in hostas
and other plants.
