Native to Turkey, India, Tibet
18-24 inched tall, mounding to 1 ft wide
Flowers May/June and sporadically all summer

Native to Europe
Flowers June-July; yellow/green inflorescence
Great photograph after a rain
8-10 inches basal foliage and up to 18 inches in flower

Reasons for poor flowering: insufficient light, planted too deep, need dividing, improper fertility, excess heat, disease
Ants are not harmful or helpful

Native to Eastern US
2-4 ft clumps, stiff erect stems
Flowers July-Sept; primarily white, pink, purple, some with eyes and some without eyes
Powdery mildew can be a problem, lower leaved will drop first so plant something shorter in front of it to hide the possible "bare legs"
Remove old flowers to encourage laterals to flower

Native to Japan
12 inch mound
Flowers in late summer with grayish balls, removal will keep mound tighter
Does well in poor soils
Artemesia ludoviciana
'Silver King'
Native to the western half of the US; look along roads in MN and WI for this one in wild form
2-3 ft tall
Flowers in the summer with white dense panicles
Valued most for its white/silver foliage and height
Tolerates poor soils, can become invasive in rich soils

18-24 inches tall
Flowers form in early summer and turn from green dense heads to pink and finally to deep red in late fall
Easy and reliable plant

Perennials for Shade

8-12 inches tall and mounding to 12 inches wide
Flowers in May before the new foliage emerges therefore cut back the old foliage in early spring to allow full appreciation of the flowers
Tolerates dry shade well; makes an excellent ground cover and good texture contrast to hosta

4 major foliage colors: green, blue, yellow, cream; the leaves can have 1 or 2 colors typically in various patterns

Flowers in mid to late summer, some are fragrant

6-8 inches tall, excellent ground cover
Flowers of white appear in May and again in Sept but are not real showy
