Types of Peonies

The form of peony blooms varies greatly.  Because of this, the American Peony Society recognizes several horticultural flower forms.

Single - five or more true petals around a center of stamens with pollen-bearing anthers
Japanese - five or more large guard petals around a center made up of stamens with abortive anthers, practically no pollen is produced
Anemone - similar or Japanese but to anthers; the filaments or stamen stems have a petal-like character and are incurved or overlapping
Semi-double - never completely double; stamens are prominent and are never intermixed with broad petals
Double - stamens and stigmas are transformed into petals making a completely double flower
