Old Business
Education Boxes - Margaret S. reviewed the request for a garden theme
education box for area K-2 teachers, presented at the June meeting. She
reported that Nancy Miller, RF library director, had $60 remaining from funds
given to her by the Garden Club for book purchases because the library is able
to purchase books at a library discount. In June, Margaret had asked Nancy
Miller (librarian) and members Kathy J. (local teacher) and Kay W. to meet and
discuss and develop ideas and costs for the proposed education box. Kathy
J. then reviewed for members the list of itmes they had developed for use in the
garden theme education box. Items include puzzles, fiction books, teacher
resource books, cassette/books, videos, seeds (for patterning), puppets, lesson
plans for teacher projects, and additional donated books. Kathy requested
an additional $100 (above the $60 book discount savings) to purchase
items. Judy J. made a motion to approve an additional $100, seconded by
Nancy G. Motion approved. As purchased puppets are expensive (around
$24) Kathy also asked for volunteers to create finger puppets with garden
gloves, velcro, and perhaps artificial flowers, to save money. Tina A. and
Geri M. volunteered to make one.
New Business
Margaret reviewed the request for funds ($150-200) by Laura L., Rocky Branch
elementary school parent and PTA member to be used in the perennial garden at
Rocky Branch. Members thought it was a good idea to support the local
school beautification effort. Geri M. made a motion to give $200 for the
Rocky Branch perennial garden. Lori N. seconded, motion passed.
Margaret reviewed the UW letter in the club's newsletter regarding the scholarship recipients. The club is sent this information as part of a request when awarding the scholarship so members know a little bit about the recipients of this year's two $400 horticulture scholarships to UW-RF.
Mark J. made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Rose R. seconded, motion passed.
